Career Heights Coaching
Pursuing Dreams. Not just setting goals.
Oftentimes in our career, we’re expected to be decided and successful, following an upward trajectory. More realistically, there are times in our career when we may feel stuck, underemployed, or, in general, not a good fit for the work we’re doing. It’s in these moments when we start looking for a change.
Through Career Heights Coaching, we can work together to help you achieve your highest career potential, find genuine purpose in your work, and make career decisions that resonate with who you are and who you want to become.
Tom Matthews, PhD
I began my career in a community mental health setting, moved into administrative roles working with lawyers practicing in Washington, DC, and, in the late 1980s, began a 35-year career in higher education. The North Star guiding my career: infinite curiosity about helping others start, build, and manage their career, with all the associated opportunities and challenges that come along the way.
In 2023, I left the university setting, choosing to focus on converting my 11-year side hustle into a more robust individual consulting practice. I’m a keen observer of the 21st Century workplace and believe the scope and pace of change have increased dramatically, offering both a chance to initiate change in a career as well as respond to the myriad external forces influencing today’s careers.
In my current practice, I’m dedicated to working with higher education professionals looking to make career transitions within or outside of the academy, high-potentials seeking or occupying the C-Suite, healthcare professionals transitioning from clinical roles to administrative leadership positions, and anyone in general who might feel stuck, knowing they’re capable of more professionally and uncertain how to get there.
I have a PhD in Counselor Education & Supervision from Syracuse University, an M.Ed. from The Pennsylvania State University, and a BA in Communication Studies from Bridgewater State University. I’m a Prosci Certified Change Practitioner with additional certifications in the Emotional & Social Competency Inventory (ESCI), Coaching for Intentional Change, and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
In addition to my work, I enjoy music concerts at venues large and small, yoga, the outdoors, traveling, and, along with my wife, visiting our three adult children, one in Europe and two in the States, including both coasts.
My Approach
The two-week intense leadership program includes 1:1 scheduled executive coaching to international and local health care CEOs, medical directors, seniors executives and nurses.
Our participants are extremely satisfied with his coaching services. He receives many compliments and great feedback from both physicians and hospital administrators.
We highly recommend him and appreciate his support.
Where do I began with Tom? Tom mentored me during my time as a Cleveland Foundation Public Service Fellow. During that time, Tom was able to nourish both my mind + my personal trials + tribulations. From integrating the liberal arts into my professional and career aspirations through timely and personalized teachings and virtual engagements; to challenging my beliefs around my self-efficacy in the boardroom and in peer relations through sessions conducted around reflection + theory to practice models. Tom Matthews was a fabulous coach, mentor, + professor, but most importantly a perfect example of the multiplicative benefits of intergenerational friendships.
